| Agile Wallaby - Macropus agilis | |
![]() Lives in open forest, woodland and grassland. A gregarious species active in late afternoon to early morning. Eats grass, leaves and fruit. Lives in groups of up to 10 individuals; several groups may form a mob when feeding. Known to dig up grass roots from 30 centimetres below the surface. ![]() Females are smaller and lighter than males. Males weigh 16 to 27 kg and measure 715-850 mm from snout to base of tail. Females weigh 9 to 15 kg and measure 593-722 mm from snout to base of tail. ![]() Breeds all year. There is a 30 day gestation period and a joey lives in the pouch for 7 to 8 months being weaned at 10 to 12 months. Females mature at 12 months, males at 14 months. ![]() This is the most common wallaby in tropical coastal Australia and the one most likely to be seen in the Top End. They feed along the roadside but have no road sense and are often killed by traffic. Their range extends from Broome in Western Australia, through the Top End of the Northern Territory and around the coast to south-east Queensland. Agile wallabies are very wary and always alert; they warn of danger by foot-thumping. ![]() | |
